this isn’t music, it’s porn SET to music…

August 12, 2006

so i was talking to a friend online and he sent me this link to a janet jackson video, just knowing that i would be completely flabbergasted by it. this video is ridiculous. rEdiculous. i can’t believe she performed like this. i have no respect for this woman as a singer or an artist. this isn’t even ABOUT singing. it’s dry sex on stage. but see for yourself. do any of you really think this is ok for a singer? i’m no prude, but there’s a time and a place…this ain’t it. anyway, your feedback on it, and the music industry nowadays in general?

  1. (Hey! First comment on your blog — I guess that’s something cool, isn’t it?)

Mainstream pop is nowadays seldom about singing or being an artist, and the music industry is more like a content-distribution industry. They don’t care for what is good, but for what sells. With the word “ethics” crossed out from their dictionaries, there is a simple equation: The more primal the urge you satisfy the more people are likely to respond to that urge, and buy your stuff.

The way people at youtube rate this proves that the vast majority seems to like it. I find this disturbing: Is “decency” a to differentiated feeling for people to have? Wouldn’t we all fare better if everybody (including the “music” industry) tried to contribute to the general advancement of human culture instead of confining it to almost brute appetites? These certainly have their place, but they’re not enough make your life worthwhile. (*Sigh* — this is starting to depress me)

    Cheers, anyways

  2. haha, well thanks for breaking the comment ice. maybe now others will follow. stay tuned.

but in response to your comment, i agree with everything you said, especially the last bit. i get caught up in my “brute appetites” just like everyone else, but that can’t be all music is about. it feels as if the majority of popular music, the music making the money, doesn’t promote any higher thought or emotion. isn’t that what music is about? i hear crap like this janet jackson song and the only thing i feel is irritation. one of my best friends once said (although he may have ripped it off from third eye blind):

“Music is the only thing in this world, with the exception of sneezing and looking at the sunset, that takes you to a place thats above the mundane. everything else is just bullshit”.

i think that about sums up my views towards music.

on a sidenote, in an unashamed attempt to promote my friend with the quote, go see his site. he’s trying to make it in this crazy music industry.
